On January 1, 2012, the pension division and valuation provisions in the Ontario Family Statute Law Amendment Act, 2009 will come into force. This program will take an in-depth look at the new legislative and regulatory framework under the Pension Benefits Act and what you need to know about the new regulations.
James Pierlot of Pierlot Pension Law will provide an overview of changes to the Ontario Pension Benefits Act and Family Law Act that will change the way pension benefits are divided on marriage or relationship breakdown.

The third plenary session of the conference will feature James Pierlot's upcoming paper that recommends current tax rules for retirement saving be replaced with a lifetime accumulation limit, to be published by the in the fall of 2011. Mr. Pierlot will present highlights of the paper, Malcolm Hamilton of Mercer will discuss how a lifetime accumulation limit could improve pension coverage in the private sector, and President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, will discuss how a lifetime accumulation contributes to expanded voluntary and workplace saving, including in the federal government's proposed pooled registered pension plans.
